Just as some foods and substances are damaging to your teeth, such as smoking, sugar, and alcohol, there are some things that you can consume that will help your teeth. And no, we’re not talking about toothpaste and mouthwash.

Your periodontist in Pasadena may or may not tell you that there is a particular food that will help protect and strengthen your teeth. There are even some foods that will work to whiten your teeth. Here at Art of Smiles, we encourage patients to incorporate more of the following foods into their diets for a whiter and healthier smile.

Almonds

Almonds are a great food to eat for healthier teeth. They contain significant amounts of calcium and protein, and they’re easy to add to your meals without even knowing they’re there. Add a handful to your salad or morning cereal, or give your yogurt an extra boost

These little nuts also reduce inflammation, which is a great thing for your gums. If you have sensitive or swollen gums, munching on a snack of almonds may reduce inflammation and get your mouth feeling better again.

Red Bell Peppers

The more you allow plaque to build up around your teeth, the more likely it is that you’ll experience the telltale signs of gingivitis—swollen or sensitive gums. Foods that contain loads of vitamin C such as red bell peppers are great to combat the effects of gingivitis for improved gum health. Other foods to consider loading up on in your diet for their vitamin C benefits include:

  • Broccoli
  • Kiwi
  • Peaches

While citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and pineapple do contain a lot of vitamin C and are generally considered good for you, they also are highly acidic, which may gradually wear away at your tooth enamel. If you choose to stock up on citrus, make sure you take the advice of your periodontist in Pasadena and eat it in moderation.

Celery

If you don’t have time to brush your teeth between meals while you're at work, eating celery can help. If you’re worried about your kids not brushing well enough, pack some celery sticks in their lunchboxes so that they can munch while they’re at school.

Although it should never be used as a replacement for brushing and flossing, celery stocks can scrape away plaque and catch bits of food that get stuck in your teeth. It also increases saliva production, which cleans your mouth of germs. Other foods to incorporate into your diet that will also help clean your teeth include:

  • Apples
  • Radishes
  • Carrots

Cheddar Cheese

We know that there are a lot of cheese lovers out there cheering about this one right now. Cheddar cheese is an excellent source of calcium and the essential protein casein, which is great when it comes to strengthening your tooth enamel. Other superfoods that are great for your tooth enamel include:

  • Almonds
  • Milk
  • Tofu
  • Yogurt

While regularly brushing and flossing your teeth are the most important thing that you can do to keep your teeth and gums strong and healthy; there are other things that you can do. Seeing a periodontist in Pasadena regularly will help, and surprisingly, so will eating the right foods.

When you take the time to incorporate some of these foods, you’ll have healthier gums and teeth. You’ll feel a lot better too overall, as all these foods are also super good for you.
